Graffiti and hip hop culture were the foundation of the Bronx art scene during the 1980s. However, Bronx art expanded outside of graffiti through time. In the past 10 years, new art spaces and galleries have popped up throughout the borough, creating environments for Bronx communities and artists to connect, unite and raise awareness about their work. As with other New York City communities, gentrification has become a huge concern for Bronx natives involved in the art world, and the question now is how to make BX art and culture thrive without attracting real estate investors.
