VIDEO EXPLAINER: Why writers went on strike

November 20, 2023 by David Cheung

On September 27, 2023, the Writers Guild of America finally agreed to a 3-year basic minimum agreement after five long months of striking as a union. This agreement will increase writer pay, provide minimum staffing in writers’ rooms, legally protect writers from scripts written by artificial intelligence, and, most importantly, ensure that writing doesn’t end up becoming gig work. Through the perspective of current and graduated NYU Tisch writers, the video explainer delves into how they felt being writers on strike and their emotions as they enter an industry that has just emerged from a contract dispute with the studios and is dealing with the emergence of new technology.
