>Wake up, New York City: it’s Fashion Week once again. Cue all the newest (and craziest) fall and winter trends as they take to the Manhattan runways.
Fashion Week officially kicked off on Friday, and will conclude in New York on February 14, before rolling out in London, Milan and Paris throughout the month and into early March. Let’s see what will stick, and what will be an immediate “no.”
New Yorkers know better than anyone that nothing screams personal style and self-expression quite like the streets of NYC. In the backdrop of Fashion Week, during a period where it feels like trends are changing on the daily, I took to Washington Square Park and asked those wandering around, “What fashion trends do you feel need to go?”
Ashley Markowtiz
“Maybe stop buying so many statement pieces, and buy accessories more frequently. You know, I think [you can] get staples [to] wear every day, and then mix and match accessories, and it’s a whole new outfit. And you can create a wardrobe with some longevity that you can wear for a long time.”
What’s your favorite basic?
“Just a nice baby tee, a white t-shirt, or jeans.”

“Jeggings!”
(Jeggings strive to look like denim, if denim was comfortable.)
“I do wear printed pants, but my favorite pants right now I buy from my hairdresser. She’s really old, and has really cool stuff you’re just not going to find anymore. She’s started to sell it, and I’m very happy about it.”

“Tight pants.”
Do you like a wider leg?
“I think I’m a comfort person, but I feel like they’re very [exclusionary] fashion trends. They’re just not the most universally flattering. It doesn’t matter the material — high-waisted, low-waisted, I just feel like you have to have a very specific look to get the look that they were designed to achieve. If that’s your bread and butter, go for it. I feel like, truly, it’s all about confidence: if you rock it, you rock it. But they are so uncomfortable, they are not made for all women.”

What’s your favorite place to shop?
“Online. Farfetch.”
Do you like putting pieces together?
“Yes, I love it.”

“Probably would be specifically pants, wide pants.”
You like the wide pant trend?
“Yeah, I definitely do like wide pants.”
What do you think about tight pants?
“That’s the thing. I think if it’s done right, it’s good. But I don’t think people do it right.”
How do you think someone can do it right?
“Something that’s skinny on the bottom, skinny on the top is definitely something I don’t think is right. Something wider on the top, skinny on the bottom would look right.”
Where do you like to shop?
“Well, it’s a personal thing, right? But I have very broad shoulders, I like COS. COS actually does do the shoulders right and then they have the right fit for me, so that’s why I usually love it.”

“Does that include hairstyles? The mullet-mustache combo. Ironic, if anybody looks at me.”

“Jerseys with cowboy boots and long, flowing white skirts — blokette.”
(“Blokette,” according to fashion site Enfnts Terribles, is “a style where you combine hyper-feminine pieces like ribbons and miniskirts with typical masculine items like football shirts.”)
What do you think about the bows that are trending right now?
“She’s cute. I like it on other people, [but] it’s not really my thing. I like when other people commit to it, I’m like, ‘OK, cute.’ But I wouldn’t wear it.”

“Tabis? Tabi, the little horse shoe.”
(Tabi are traditional Japanese shoes. They have a split between the big toe and the rest of the toes, promoting flexibility and stability.)
“I’m sorry, I just can’t get into that. They’re kind of freaky looking to me, which, I guess is the point, but you know.”
Where is your favorite place to shop?
“I’ve honestly been going to Urban Outfitters now that I actually have money for it. Besides that, I like thrift shopping. I usually go to L Train Vintage in Brooklyn — that or Marshalls.”
