On Wednesday, May 7, 133 Cardinals will meet to begin to vote on who will replace Pope Francis, who died on April 21 after a 12-year long pontificate. The late Pope is considered to be the most forward-looking in the Church’s history, embracing inclusion more forcefully than his predecessors did. From Hispanic immigrants in Brooklyn to LGBT Catholics in Manhattan, diverse communities in New York are mourning Francis and the social values he championed. As the Vatican prepares to select who will lead the Church next, Catholics in the City reflect on his legacy and voice their hopes and fears for what might come next.
