Tens of Thousands March to Raise Money for Breast Cancer Research

As breast cancer rates are rising in young women, 50,000 New Yorkers donned pink apparel and marched through Central Park for the national Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

On Oct. 19, over 50,000 survivors, caregivers and New Yorkers marched through the winding pathways of Central Park for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. This year alone, more than 300,000 Americans are estimated to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and more than 40,000 people will die from it. Making Strides is the country’s largest organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research. Since 1985, awareness efforts like Making Strides have helped save over half a million lives, according to the American Cancer Society. Once participants sign up for the lifesaving walk, they receive a personal donation page that they can use to fundraise and gain support for the roughly four-mile walk. Many walkers have a personal connection to the cause, and we caught up with a few in Central Park.
